The 31 students who attended did very well and came away with many awards. Many also qualified for the national leadership conference which will be held in Baltimore in July. • Welcome to My Kitchen

    Laura Estes|Updated Apr 13, 2018

Spring keeps tempting us with bits of sunshine between bouts of April downpours. The ground is too soggy to do much garden preparation, so it is a good time to clean out your freezer. Those who purchase a whole beef and have it cut to order, may find an oxtail among the end of season packages. Oxtail Stew is a rich, savory dish, but it requires some long, slow, cooking times. Using a slow-cooker to prepare this dish makes the process manageable. The key to a good mild flavor...

  • Letter to the Editor: Hitchhiking vs. giving a lift after a car breakdown

    Updated Apr 11, 2018

To the Editor: Don’t pick up strangers. Yes, but are there exceptions? In Odessa, if I see a friend walking, I will pull over and ask if they are just walking or need a ride, especially if I see a woman carrying grocery bags. I pull over and offer her a ride even if I don’t know her. None of my men friends ever said yes to a ride. What about off the highway? If I see a car parked on the side of the road and then see someone walking, yes I am going to stop and ask if they need help. If I see one bicyclist or one motorcyclist,...

  • Letter to the Editor: On cemetery etiquette; how do you grieve?

    Updated Apr 11, 2018

To the Editor: Spring is here, the grass is starting to grow and people are beginning to emerge from their winter shells to begin the never-ending lawn maintenance chores of summer. This also means that cemetery maintenance will be in full swing as well. Unless I am misunderstood, the community taxpayers provide the funds for the maintenance and equipment of the cemetery to care for the marked plots of dirt and grass that community taxpayers have purchased as the final resting place for their loved ones. People have many...

  • Mad Hatter's Ball Daddy/Daughter Dance

    Linda Goodman|Updated Apr 5, 2018

On Saturday, March 24, I had the extreme pleasure of donating and building, with the much needed help of Tammy Tokas, a 25-ft.-long (give or take) balloon arch for The Mad Hatters Ball, the second annual daddy/daughter dance hosted by Go! Odessa Recreation. I absolutely love creating these rubber works of art and it had been almost exactly 10 years since I had last built one. Although I know balloons haven't changed much in the last 10 years I was still extremely nervous. I...

  • Lions Club Easter Egg Hunt draws crowd

    Updated Apr 5, 2018

The Easter Egg Hunt put on by the Odessa Lions Club at Reiman Park in Odessa was very well attended by the children of many current and former Odessa residents. The air horn that normally gives the kids the signal to run for the eggs was forgotten, so the decision was made to use Marlon Schafer's car horn. The kids took off, and within about 20 minutes, all three golden eggs entitling the finder to an Easter basket filled with goodies had been found. In the youngest age...

    Updated Apr 4, 2018

Garrett Marvin, an officer with the Liquor and Cannabis Control Board of Washington state, was in Odessa Tuesday to present a tutorial on the rights and obligations of servers of alcohol. The two main issues of concern in terms of compliance with state laws are checking identification to ensure that alcohol is not sold to minors (anyone under the age of 21) and determining when a customer might be over-served (sold or given more alcohol while already obviously inebriated). Most information related to providing a safe and...

  • Wizard of Oz showcases local talent

Last week's performance of the Wizard of Oz musical by Odessa students was a very successful event. Wednesday's performances, one during the school day and one in the evening, were well attended. Updated Mar 29, 2018

Last weekend's motocross racing took place south of town on sagebrush-covered land in weather more winter-like than it had been just a few weeks before. It was also windy, which brings with it the wind chill factor. But the Stumpjumpers Motorcycle Club members are a hardy bunch, and they turned out in even larger numbers than they had last year, as reported by Odessa police chief Tom Clark at last night's town council meeting. He also said there were no reported serious...
