REARDAN--The Reardan-Edwall School District will be choosing a new mascot by next school year, the district announced today. The “Indians” mascot was among the Native American monikers banned in House Bill 1356, which was just signed into state law. The bill offered an exception for schools to use a Native-related mascot if the district is in or borders a county with some or all of a tribal reservation, if said tribe gives permission. However, superintendent Eric Sobotta announced in a Facebook post on the district's pag...

DAVENPORT – The COVID-19 virus is still present in Lincoln County, but according to Gov. Jay Inslee’s current metrics, there isn’t currently a huge risk of moving back to Phase 2 when counties are next evaluated Monday, May 3. For a “small” county with less than 50,000 people, like Lincoln County, there must be more than 100 new cases of the virus and three or more new hospitalizations in the last 14 days for a move back to Phase 2. As of April 28, there were 38 new cases in the last 14 days and zero new hospitali...
DAVENPORT – To adjust for strange schedules caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the middle and high school here have been utilizing a quarter system, as opposed to a regular, seven-period day. A recent survey conducted among students indicated that a majority prefer a possible future quarter system where there are just three to four classes taken at a time split throughout the year, principal Chad Prewitt shared with the school board at the board’s April 26 meeting. Only seventh-graders favored a normal, seven-period return to...

ODESSA – Odessa Clinic manager Barbara Schlimmer has a couple of questions for the local population, “Are you 50 or older? Do you know somebody 50 or older?” The reason she asks is because shingles is a painful rash illness that can lead to long-term nerve pain that, in some cases, can last years after the shingles rash disappears. This nerve pain can limit daily activity for many years afterward. Shingles is not a one-time-only condition. It can re-occur throughout a lifetime. As we get older, the risk of shingles and its re...

A Pioneer Days Parade is likely off for the second straight year, Davenport mayor Brad Sweet informed council at their April 14 meeting. He said event organizers are still exploring possibilities for other Pioneer Days events to hold within public health guidelines, but a parade is unlikely given the state’s mandates. Adding to the difficulty of holding a parade is the fact that its insurance is usually handled by the Davenport Chamber of Commerce, which is effectively non-functioning at the present time and has no p...

DAVENPORT-The small refueling tank at the airport where pilots can come park their plane, fill up with gas and take a break in the pilot's lounge needs to be refilled about once or twice a year. Because the tank is less than 10,000 gallons (total, it's 3,000 gallons), the city is charged a small fuel tax, or "short load fee." Council gave the go-ahead to use $3,000 from tourism tax revenue to cover those fee costs at the April 14 meeting. The extra charge on the small fuel...

The official filing period for the fall elections will be held May 17 through May 21, 2021. All offices are subject to both Primary and General Elections. The filing fee of 1% of the annual salary shall accompany the Declaration of Candidacy. There is no fee if the office sought is without a fixed salary. Anyone wishing directions on filing for office may...

The $4,175 federal Covid grant received through the Lincoln County EDC is being used to offset about half of that cost, so the net cost to the Chamber is $5,825. The trailer is fully outfitted for providing mobile outdoor food service, an...
