    Ashley Parkinson, The Record-Times|Updated Nov 18, 2022

ODESSA— The boys’ basketball team looks to increase their chances for a postseason run in the 2022-23 season as they started practice on Monday, Nov. 14. The Tigers ended their 2021 season in a loser-out game against Selkirk in a suspenseful overtime game, 60-57. At the time, junior Jacob Scrupps scored 19 points, five rebounds and senior Daeton Deife scored 14 points. Scrupps is a hopeful return after not playing the football season due to injury. He was named to the NE1B all-league team in February for his con...

REARDAN-Coach Brian Graham welcomed 22 boys to the Screaming Eagles' first basketball practice of the season on Nov. 14. In his eighth season at the helm, Graham is optimistic his team will improve on last year's 10-12 record. "Last year we started two freshmen," he said, "but now they are sophomores. We have some kids with high-level skills, but overall, we are still young." Prior to the first practice, he met with each player to discuss the season. "They have high...

    Ashley Parkinson, The Record-Times|Updated Nov 18, 2022

ODESSA—Head Coach Travis Schuh expects a solid basketball season for the Tigers, who had their first practice on Monday, Nov. 14. “Last year, we were only one game away from going to the regional basketball tournament,” Schuh said. “We only lost a couple of girls from last year.” Senior Grace Nelson hopes to return as a starting point guard later in the season. Nelson has been out for two seasons due to knee injuries. “Might not be until the end of December, beginning of January,” Schuh said. Schuh said three seniors are r...

    Drew Lawson, The Record-Times|Updated Nov 18, 2022

DAVENPORT-A first-year head coach that has been an assistant coach for over 20 years. Four wrestlers returning that competed at the Tacoma Dome last year. And for the first time, two females ready to make school history. That's the current situation for the Davenport wrestling team, that began practice under new head coach Matt Schneider this week. Schneider, a local rancher that was an accomplished wrestler in his own right in the 1990's, will head the team after being an ass...

DAVENPORT - A girls basketball squad that finished 7th in the Northeast 2B before falling in its first district game in February at West Valley High School is expected to take a step forward this season. Davenport returns most of its roster from last season, which head coach Stacia Soliday should allow for improvement. "I think we'll be better," Soliday said. "We're a year older and more experienced." Soliday said the team will be led by seniors Lena Waters and Kiersten Kemmer...

  • Davenport boys hope to reach bigger heights

    Drew Lawson, The Record-Times|Updated Nov 18, 2022

DAVENPORT-The boys basketball season last season had a lot of promise into February, but an upset loss to Lind-Ritzville/Sprague at districts squashed hopes of a state playoff run. Much of that team returns for this season, but head coach Matt Henry said the goal for this year is to take a more day-by-day approach. "We need to be holding each other accountable every day," Henry said. "Eventually we'll look up and see how far we've come." Senior stars Tennesee Rainwater and...

  • Senior class to lead Reardan girls basketball

    Byrne Bennett, The Record-Times|Updated Nov 18, 2022

REARDAN–This year's Screaming Eagles girls basketball team may be short handed, but Coach Bob Swannack believes his senior-laden squad will be competitive in the NE2B League. Swannack graduated eight players from last year's team that finished 13-7. The Screaming Eagles may be unable to field a junior varsity team this year due to low player turnout. "Because this team played in the shadow of last year's seniors, we are going to have to learn on the fly," Swannack said. Though...

  • Odessa girls sixth at state

    Teren Kowatsch, The Record-Times|Updated Nov 18, 2022

YAKIMA – The Odessa Tigers came into the WIAA 1B State Tournament as the No. 12-seed and minimal expectations. That made it all the more surprising when the Tigers finished in sixth-place in the tournament and were just a few-point-swing away from potentially finishing fifth. Odessa ended up in the fifth-place bracket after beating No. 5-seed Liberty Christian 3-2 on Nov. 10 before losing 3-0 to eventual semi-finalist Naselle, also on Nov. 10. Odessa continued to put on the u...

  • Welcome to My Kitchen

    Laura Estes|Updated Nov 18, 2022

Thanksgiving menus are on the minds of many area cooks. Turkey, beef roast, ham, or a combination? What sides and desserts will fit in range and refrigerator space? What oven dishes will cook in the meat standing time? Fresh turkeys should be kept refrigerated until ready to use. If you are brining a turkey, keep the brining bird refrigerated. A frozen turkey will need to be thawed under refrigeration, beginning 4 to 5 days before use, depending on size. Be sure to put a pan...

  • Prepare your car for winter

    The Record-Times|Updated Nov 18, 2022

Summer and fall can stake their claim as road trip season, and even devoted drivers may admit that winter is generally a less desirable time to take to the open road. The elements factor heavily into that reputation, as fewer hours of daylight, snow and ice are just some of the variables that can make it less enjoyable, and potentially more dangerous, to drive in winter. In anticipation of adverse driving conditions, vehicle owners can take various steps to prepare their cars and trucks for winter. Upgrade your wiper blades....
