REARDAN–Pat Hogan found his life's calling in serving others. His joy is infectious, and his encouragement knows no bounds. But it wasn't always like that. As a child growing up on Waukon Road, east of town, Hogan had to compete with a bottle for his father's attention. Alcohol in his home made his childhood "painful." After attending school in Edwall for eight years, he transferred to Reardan for the ninth grade. During his sophomore year, his father, driving drunk, hit a t...

Later that day, he leads the high school pep band for a rivalry basketball game. Such is the life of Rob Harper, a longtime teacher and coach here who has seen many students but remained a steadfast pillar of the school and community. "You talk about someone who has been here the longest and seen it all,...
DAVENPORT—It’s budget season, and the “largest” local budget is that of Lincoln County. Rising medical insurance, risk insurance and other costs have made the 2023 budget a challenge to complete for the Auditor’s Office and county commissioners, but that budget is getting closer to finalization every day. Chief accountant Rhonda Luiten shared department figures with The Record-Times and said these figures likely won’t be adjusted before the budget is finalized. The costliest current expense item budgeted is Sheriff ope...

DAVENPORT-For the first five minutes of the rivalry boys basketball matchup between Reardan and Davenport, it looked like the visiting Screaming Eagles might have figured something out about the Gorillas. Then, the threes started raining in for Davenport and the Gorillas overcame a slow offensive start to win 74-39. Reardan came out packing the paint, taking away Davenport's driving lanes and forcing contested three-point shots that the Gorillas couldn't hit. This allowed the...

DAVENPORT–County residents will see a 1% increase in their property taxes next year. As is a typical annual practice, the Lincoln County Commissioners approved a 1% bump at their regular meeting Dec. 5. Government municipalities such as counties, fire districts and school districts are prohibited from raising taxes more than 1% in an annual cycle. “If we didn’t need the money, we wouldn’t do it,” commissioner Rob Coffman commented while noting that a 1% raise equates to very little money received compared to the expenses...

Though funding hasn’t been obtained, some improvements to that road are amongst the 26 projects presented Monday, Dec. 5. Projects already funded...

DAVENPORT-What started as local businesspeople taking their daily work breaks to enjoy a cup of coffee together decades and decades ago has evolved into a group of friends shooting the breeze rain, snow or shine at two local homes, but the goal remains the same: connections, friendship and a few jokes here and there. A group mostly consisting of retired men meets two days a week, spending usually about an hour sharing conversation over hot coffee. Tuesdays are at Bob Martin's...
