EDWALL – Does it take a wheat grower to know how to represent wheat growers? It certainly doesn't hurt, which is good news for the National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) as they welcome Mariah Wollweber, a fifth-generation Washington wheat grower, as their new director of communications and partnerships. Wollweber grew up on her family's farm in Edwall, Wash., where she began helping her grandfather bale hay at age 8 and stepped up to driving a harvest truck at 13. S...

DAVENPORT – With the recent opening of Lincoln Hospital's new medical clinic, area residents are once again reminded of how fortunate they are to have top notch medical care and providers in our own backyards. Medical providers and facilities have been a mainstay of Davenport since pioneer days, and behind every good facility are those who put in many years to serve others. People like Lincoln Hospital's "Honest Abe," who has been filling shifts at the hospital since it opened...

Zucchini season is here. There are many ways to use this prolific vegetable. Small, tender zucchini sautéed with a bit of onion, or added to a stir-fry, grated in breads, cookies or cakes, and some sneaky cooks puree and add to just about anything. Camouflaged with chocolate, baked into breads and pastries and mixed into sauces and soups, vitamins and fiber are added to diets with out the eater knowing the difference. Chilly nights the past few days found me searching for...

Thursday, July 29, the Summer Reading Program concluded with Kris Moritz, leader, with two assistants, Evie Mann and Erica Bailey. During their reading and learning session the children seemed intrigued by some of the creatures: blobfish, goblin shark, bird-eating tarantula, Japanese spider crab and the dugong (a cousin to the manatee). One of their crafts was making animals out of play dough, which allowed them to express their creativity. The final project had guidelines....

Summer 2021 has produced a very long string of hot, rainless days. I have said on a number of occasions, we skipped July and went straight to August in the weather department. Thankfully, most days have been blessed with cool nights. As an early riser, the cold mornings make me think comfort food, but by noon the idea of macaroni and cheese has turned into pasta salad. Tuck this recipe for Super Macaroni & Cheese away for the first true autumn day. Clarene Haynie shared this...
