  • The Creative Corner

Hi, Odessa Record, Here's another epistle, which is "Aged" for printing, should you desire. So many do not realize how wealthy they are, living in this blessed country, even though they consider themselves poor. Yes, even those who receive welfare and food stamps are filthy rich compared to the billions who live in other parts of the world and live in cardboard and rusted out corrugated sheet metal one room shanties and who have to cook their meals over an open fire on the ground. Yes --- America is truly "The Promised Land"...

  • Welcome to My Kitchen

To make a long story short, the cookie recipes that we had been waiting for were in with a packet of at least a hundred zucchini recipes, which I filed away until zucchini season. So for all who have been waiting for Cindi Bell’s Ginger Snap recipe, here it is. Ginger Snaps 3/4 cup shortening 1 cup brown sugar, packed 1 egg 1/4 cup black strap molasses 2 cups flour, sifted 1/4 tsp salt 2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp each ground ginger, cinnamon and cloves Granulated sugar f...

What is freedom? Ask a person and they will often say it is freedom from something. What we often forget is that it is also freedom to do something such as believe as we see fit or to disagree with our government without going to jail. It is also something that is given by God not by our government. Rights and freedoms are God given not government given for if a right is given by man (a government) it can be taken away by man. If however, a right is given by God man has no right to take it away. This is something to remember...

  • The Creative Corner: An Old Gandy Passed Away

    Arley M Bischoff

An old gandy passed away, and as I stood solemn at his grave, I remembered how the railroad, had worked him like a---slave! I recalled how he was treated, it was oft---like he was dirt! He never missed a day of work, though his aching back would hurt. And no one really gave a damn, how much steel this gandy laid, Or the ties he hand dug in, and tamped tight with a spade. Yes---as I began to reminisce, the age of steam meandered by, Along with things this man endured, swinging pick and spiking tie. How sweat profusely dripped,...

  • The Creative Corner: Letter

Believe it or not, I received a couple of telephone calls complimenting my “Magic Wand” epistle that you printed in the “Record” a short time ago. Sooooooo---I thought I would try another. This one is about laboring railroad trackmen who, somehow, were nick-named “gandy dancers,” while working on the extra gangs or section crews. The gandy always seemed to be looked down upon and never received credit for any of his hard work. I can surely relate to that, as I served my time as a gandy dancer (30 years), and I truly walke...

School is out and the swimming pool is open. Soon young entrepreneurs will be setting up lemonade stands to earn money for swimming and other summertime activities. Personally, I try to never pass by a children's lemonade enterprise. I like to encourage budding business owners. Following are some tips for operating a successful lemonade stand. 1. Make your signs big. Use an extra wide marking pen to make lettering that can be read from half a block away so customers have time...

  • No killer bees here, just good old-time honey bees

Odessa Deputy Marshal Bryce Peterson got one of his stranger calls for service this past week. A swarm of bees landed in the roadway just outside of Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center. The bees all remained pretty much in a clump in the roadway, even as people tried to run over them to chase them away. They stayed, however, and Peterson was at a loss. After consulting with Odessa Public Works director Roger Sebesta, however, he was referred to local resident Harvey Delzer, who...

When the Frederick family gathered recently for the funeral of their wife, mother, grandmother Vi Frederick, and again soon after for the Memorial Day holiday, they began comparing notes about how long various members had served in the U.S. military. Rev Tim Hauge

Christ Lutheran Church In the Biblical account of Jesus’ last moments with his disciples prior to his ascension as recorded in the first chapter of the New Testament book of Acts, Christians then and now are given their “marching orders.” Jesus told them to be his witnesses “in Jerusalem and Judea/Samaria, even unto the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) The disciples sort of understood that command, but they were not out telling any and everyone about Jesus when God's Holy Spir...

  • Creative Corner: How I Wish I Had A Magic Wand

    Arley Bischoff

If I had a magic wand, I'd wave it for all it’s worth, To purge all of the hate that plagues this hostile Earth! In the name of some religion, a war always seems to start! I'd give my magic wand a wave to vanquish evil from man’s heart! Then---my magic wand I'd wave, to forever end all war! There would never be a murder, no one would rob a bank or store! Yes, I’d wave that precious wand, and all killing I would ban! For man hath no greater enemy, than man's---inhumanity---to man! I would banish pangs of hunger; there would...

Do we dare think summer is here after having one eighty degree day? Let’s just assume so and get on with the season of chilled party dips, cold salads and fruity desserts. Several requests came in for Rhonda Kuch’s Bacon Dip. She found this recipe in a magazine a number of years ago, and over time has adjusted it to accommodate new products available today. The recipe that follows is the original, with Rhonda’s adjustments in the following paragraph. Bacon Dip 8 ounces softe...
