The phrase, “I had the pleasure of speaking to...” really and truly applies to certain people in this world. Merleen Smith is the epitome of that phrase. After talking with her I always feel like I am leaving the conversation better off than I was before I started it. I can always count on the fact I will have laughed at least twice and smiled the entire time. I had the pleasure of talking with Merleen last week about the dates that the Odessa Food Bank is open and about the v...

As Brent Dell and Les Jimerson have settled into their roles as members of the Odessa peace-keeping force over the past few months, some interesting changes have been announced for the town. Research by Dell, for example, has confirmed that per the Revised Code of Washington (RCW), towns below a certain population limit shall have a Town Marshal as their top law-enforcement official. Dell told the town council at Monday's regular meeting that he is happy to go that route and...

State Representative Tom Dent has provided a summary of the end of the latest legislative session: On April 28, the last day of the regular session, the Legislature passed a new two-year operating budget. The $52.5 billion spending plan increases spending by $7.8 billion or 17.5 percent. I did not vote for the operating budget. It is unsustainable. We have increased spending substantially over the last decade. In fact, since 2013 when Gov. Inslee came into office, spending has increased 70 percent. If we have any kind of...

Singing "Come on In" (and Sit Down and Make Your Selves at Home) brought a...
Is vaping prevalent with our youth? Have a conversation with your local schools and you will find that this is one of the fastest growing trends with our late elementary, middle and high school students. Last week the nation celebrated EMS week. Unfortunately, Odessa, like many rural communities, needs more EMTs. Washington’s smallest communities are among those being hurt the most. Rural areas typically don’t have enough volume to employ full time EMTs and therefore rely heavily on community members to gain the necessary credentials and fill the need by sharing response call with others who typically have full time “day jobs”. OMHC pays each EMT a small hourly rate to be on call and a competitive wage when actually on duty...
WMC interpretative statements provide clarity and supported by CDC release OLYMPIA, MAY 24, 2019 – New opioid prescribing rules, effective January 2019, do not mandate that doctors taper chronic pain patients. Pain lasting more than 12 weeks is considered chronic. Nor do they set pill limits. Some doctors and patients have been misinformed that the rules would cut off patients from their prescriptions. To be clear, the opioid prescribing rules for chronic pain patients in Washington have remained largely unchanged since 2...

It is one thing to sit in the comfort of one's home and read about these unique reptiles; and it is quite...

Cruizin' Harrington Beautiful skies and weather prevailed for the 8th Annual Cruizin' Harrington event. Main Street (not Third St) was barricaded for vendors at its junction with Third Street, and traffic flowed slowly and smoothly throughout the day. There was a sufficient breeze to unfurl the flags that lined the streets and the cemetery. The Booster Club serving breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. provided biscuits and gravy, eggs, fruit, coffee and juice to over 50 people...

Opportunity Zones provide tax incentives related to long-term private investment in areas that suffer from a lack of business growth. The IRS has recently released draft regulation for the program, and private investors can now begin looking for Zone properties where they can take full advantage of the tax incentives....
May 7 special meeting A special meeting of the Odessa Town Council was held May 7 in the public library at the community center. Steve Nelson of CenturyWest Engineering and Rick Rose of the USDA were present via telephone conference call. Partnering with private banks to borrow the loan amount would incur additional interest and fees to the t...

The Merry Hikesters are approximately 20 members of a hiking club out of Olympia who spent several days in Odessa last week. These retired educators and government workers had gotten to know a retired geologist named Pat Pringle who was willing to accompany them on their hikes in eastern Washington's channeled scablands. He explained to them how the scablands came to be carved out of the landscape during the cataclysmic floods that swept through the area as the last Ice Age...
