Members of the American Legion Riders Post #28 was in Odessa last week on their way to Spokane for a Legion convention. The group was met just outside of Odessa by members of the local VFW and American Legion posts on their own motorcycles, as well as other non-motorcycle members from Odessa. The firemen's barbecue last week on July 4 at Reiman Park in Odessa was very well attended. Rural fire chief Roger Sebesta kept a tally of the meals purchased as approximately 270 people filed past his cash drawer and on through the serving line. Firemen and their family members prepared pulled pork earlier in the week along with side dishes of homemade baked beans and potato salad. The FBLA National Leadership Conference was held June 28-July 3 in San Antonio, Texas, where 29 Odessa students competed in 13 events and brought home five national awards. The Publication Design team, consisting of Maddy Wagner and Tori Weishaar, placed third in the nation after having taken a fifth place at Regionals and a fourth at State. Town Council The town received one application for the Lodging Tax funds released for expenditure by the council. The application submitted by the Odessa Chamber of Commerce was approved unanimously. Odessa Chamber of Commerce Final numbers for the Stumpjumpers Desert 100 event is $6,033 net profit from the hospitality tent, as well as $1,576 net profit from the Chamber banquet. The 14 Odessa High School graduates of 2019 received their diplomas Saturday morning at commencement in the gymnasium. Though a relatively small group, these students collectively earned $127,304 in scholarships to pursue higher education. As Brent Dell and Les Jimerson have settled into their roles as members of the Odessa peace-keeping force over the past few months, some interesting changes have been announced for the town. The state track meet for 1B, 2B and 1A schools took place last Friday and Saturday at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. The Odessa track and field teams acquitted themselves well, with the boys 4xl00 relay team ascending to the top of the podium as state champions in that event. The Merry Hikesters are approximately 20 members of a hiking club out of Olympia who spent several days in Odessa last week. These retired educators and government workers had gotten to know a retired geologist named Pat Pringle who was willing to accompany them on their hikes in eastern Washington's channeled scablands. Tuesday's meeting of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce was headed by a very tired trio of officers.
