  • Emergency-clause squelches voices

    Jeff Wilson|Updated Jun 5, 2025

Last year the Washington Legislature passed one of those high-handed virtue-signaling bills so popular with our green friends in the majority party. HB 1589 allows the state's largest private utility to exit the natural gas business and shunt billions of dollars in shutdown costs to its customers. Gas and electricity prices will soar in Puget Sound Energy's service territory, business will be disrupted and homeowners will face enormous costs to replace gas-powered appliances...

  • Harvard, higher ed facing issues

    Don C. Brunell|Updated Jun 5, 2025

Although President Donald Trump and Harvard’s recent spats make headlines, key issues in question affect all higher education. Harvard, our nation’s first college (1636), is a center of current civil disruption and antisemitic behavior. The timing is bad because high school graduates are finalizing their college choices or deciding to forego college altogether. Last year, Boston Magazine’s Jon Keller described Harvard as suffering from “A crushing cancel culture, accusat...

  • Davenport traffic laws to take notice of

    Gabe Gants|Updated Jun 5, 2025

There are far too many traffic rules to cover over the span of a short article, but I was asked if I could provide some basic information on common traffic violations observed within the city limits of Davenport. Besides common offenses such as speed and failure to wear a seatbelt, there are four rules of the road we commonly see violated in the downtown Davenport area. The first common violation we see is the crossing of the solid yellow barrier located in the downtown corridor on Morgan Street between Harker Street and...

  • Field notes from your friendly neighborhood editor-in-camo

    Olivia Harnack|Updated Jun 5, 2025

Listen here, privates-kidding, kidding! Listen up, Lincoln County-said in the tone of someone who once forgot their own keys while holding them and is now somehow nearly licensed to operate a 22,000-pound combat truck. That's right, your managing editor has traded the newsroom for night vision and a whole lot of sunscreen. I've been out in the Idaho desert for a little over a week with the National Guard, and while this field training isn't forever, it has definitely been an...

  • Welcome to My Kitchen

    Laura Estes|Updated Jun 5, 2025

Rhubarb in area gardens is flourishing in the current cool nights, recent rains and sunny, but not too hot days. This tart vegetable is used mostly as a fruit in a vast array of dessert recipes, jams and jellies. Rhubarb pie is a favorite of many, others like cobblers and crisps. Karma Henry shared a recipe for Baked Sticky Pudding several years ago, and it was included in this column at that time. This simple to prepare recipe captures the fresh spring flavor of rhubarb witho...

The agency is also emphasizing new regulations to combat chronic wasting disease (CWD), a fatal illness affecting deer, elk, and moose. Ticks pose a growing concern. Although WDFW does not typically manage insects, ticks—classified as arachnids—are a rising concern, with reports indicating high numbers this year. Ticks can trans...

  • Ag equipment meets its match in Lind

    Rick Haverinen, The Journal|Updated Jun 5, 2025

LIND — The motto of “Nothing Runs Like a Deere” is turned in its head June 13-14 at the Lind Combine Derby at the Lind Lions Club Arena. The goal seems to be making farm equipment go kaput. By design. Derby organizer Mike Doyle says he has 13 entries this year that will run in heats of four, five and four. “Each heat runs about 20 minutes,” Doyle said. “Then we drag out the disabled combines with the loader. Once we get through all three heats we give them an hour and a half to get their combines up and going again, and...
