Normally, the Odessa Town Council would have met on Tuesday, since Monday was a designated holiday, Veterans Day. Consultation with council members revealed, however, that no quorum would be achieved on Tuesday. Therefore, the meeting was held Monday with all council members present, along with several members of the public intent on hearing the council's decision regarding pets or livestock inside the town limits. November Panther Newsletter A recently printed Panther News highlighted the Cowboy Buck and Elizabeth performance including details of their practice sessions at the school. The fifth and sixth grades took a field trip to the Eastern Washington University Challenge Course behind Roos Field on the campus. Volleyball The Tiger volleyball season has ended, as only one team from our local district was allowed to move on to the state tournament being held in Yakima this weekend. The Tigers’ loss to Pomeroy last Saturday meant that the Tiger girls will stay home. We find it a rather sad ending to the stellar play the team exhibited in the preliminaries leading up to last Saturday. The girls fought very hard and deserved a shot at state. Northeast 1B League, South Division, All-League team members have been named. Included were the Odessa Tiger’s Camden Weber at quarterback and running backs Marcus King and Joshua Clark. At wide receiver, sophomore Tim DeWulf made the list, as did offensive linemen Theron Schlomer and Jaden Hunt. Honorable mention at offensive lineman went to Odessa senior Lane Lobe. Volunteers Merleen and Gunner Smith and Stan Dammel make a trip to Ritzville each month to meet the Second Harvest Food Bank truck. There, they pick up food for not only Odessa's Food Bank, but also the Odessa Backpack Program. They generously donate their time and gas to make the school delivery, as shown in the picture, and also unload and put away the food for Odessa's Food Bank. Unfortunately, a new slide on the Porcupine Bay project occurred on October 3 and work has been halted on the east (downhill side) soldier-pile retaining wall. This work stoppage is due to slope stability and worker safety issues. Since we now have "differing site conditions," there is an ongoing engineering investigation to determine if additional work may be needed to stabilize the existing slope and/or east soldier-pile retaining wall. Odessa High School's FFA advisor HaLee Walter reports that the Halloween Carnival was a big success, with over 100 people attending the event in the Odessa Community Center. The group partnered this year with the Odessa Chamber of Commerce and included downtown trick-or-treating at participating businesses for a limited time period. Maria Cantwell, Democrat, collected only1,368 votes in Lincoln County or 28.77% of the vote, while Susan Hutchison, Republican garnered 3,387 votes or 71.23%. Statewide, however, Cantwell gathered 1,144,970 for 58.6% compared to Hutchison’s 808,873 or 41.4%. The Odessa Athletic Booster Club dinner and auction held last Saturday, October 27, at the Odessa Community Center raised over $25,000 for Tiger athletics. The community center was decorated in a black and white Tiger theme. Even the dessert bar, where community members outdid themselves baking and purchasing sports-themed desserts for attendees to enjoy followed the same theme. Presenting Peter Davenport “A Night of UFOs” was presented by Peter Davenport, Director of the National UFO Reporting Center co-sponsored by the Harrington Public Development Authority and the Harrington Opera House Society. This benefit lecture and slide presentation began at 6 p.m. to an audience of about 85. On Saturday, October 26, Cathy McMorris Rodgers stopped in Odessa and several other small towns in Lincoln County to meet with constituents and urge all registered voters to mail in their ballots for this important midterm election. STAFF REPORTS The 48th annual Deutschesfest has come and gone. By early Monday afternoon, you would not know that a festival had taken place over the weekend. The Odessa public works crew, employees of the Odessa Trading Company and volunteers from various businesses and civic organizations were johnny-on-the-spot to return the town to its hard-working normal routine. Burning Man Saturday, August 25, a Harrington resident and her sister departed Harrington in a well-laden automobile with gear, supplies and camping equipment strapped to the top, and a sign on the rear reading "The Kettles Go to Burning Man." The preparation for the trip was long, having made reservations in January and great planning into what costumes might be well-received. The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team continues to investigate the deputy-involved shooting that occurred September 6, 2018 at a residence located in the 39600 block of Cayuse Cove Rd. in Lincoln County. Another Entrepreneur "Studio 1 on South 3rd St." has announced its entrance to the business district of Harrington where Paula and Ray Harrington will look forward to seeing the community at large at their opening in mid-September. The town council met August 27 in the public library to hear from Steve Nelson of Century West Engineering on the status of various projects dealing with streets and water/sewer infrastructure.
